Christian outreach through music and education.

Summer Music Symposium

As part of the 2012 Summer Tour, the Sacred Winds Ensemble will be providing music education outreach to middle school and high school instrumental music students in the Charleston area.  The event will be held on June 15 at Berekely High School.

Student Curriculum

The Student’s Track is designed to assist the student’s applied musical development within both solo and ensemble settings.  Session One focuses on instrumental performance issues specific to the student’s instrument of study while Session Two provides an opportunity to play chamber music scored for choirs of individual instruments (ie. trumpet ensemble, clarinet ensemble, etc.).  Session Three allows the student to choose one of four topics:

Preparing for a College Audition walks the student through a typical audition as well as discussing topics relevant to auditions, the college application process, and scholarships (Clinician: David Threlkeld, Professor of Music, University of the Cumberlands);

Jazz Improvisation is a lab setting where the student will improvise with a jazz combo —  comprised of members from Sacred Winds –while receiving instruction to improve his/her skill.  (Lead Clinician: Eric Seireveld, MM in Jazz Performance, Indiana University);

Practical Practice gives proven techniques for effective individual practice (Clinician: Dominic Rotella, Horn, Civic Orchestra of Chicago);

Chamber Music Coaching allows student chamber music ensembles to receive  ensemble instruction (Clinicians: various Sacred Winds Ensemble members).

Director Curriculum

The Director’s Track focuses primarily on conducting and rehearsal techniques.  Session One presents practical approaches to improve gestural vocabulary while Session Two discusses proven practices for improving ensemble performance.  Session Three provides the director an opportunity to conduct the Sacred Winds Ensemble while receiving feedback and suggestions on their conducting from the clinician.  (Clinician: Dr. Scott Bersaglia, Music Director, Sacred Winds Ensemble).

Testimonials

“I am impressed that the group is not satisfied with merely playing the standard repertoire.”
