June Concerts Approaching

The Sacred Winds Ensemble comes to The First Federal Center in Hazard, KY for their 2012 tour on Sunday, June 10 at 2:30 pm.  This summer’s concert, Psalms, Hymns, and Spirituals Songs: The Gospel in Appalachian Music explores Christian worship music well-known in Appalachia including such hymns as “Amazing Grace” and “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy”.  Kentucky-based composer, James Curnow, will join the ensemble to guest conduct his composition, “Rhapsody on American Shape Note Melodies” and Dr. Will Peebles, Director of the School of Music at Western Carolina University, will discuss Appalachian music and lead everyone in a Sacred Harp (shape-note) singing.  Rounding out the program will include works by Copland, Grantham, and Ellisor.

The ensemble will also present the concert in Ashland, KY at The Paramount Arts Center on June 11 at 7:00 pm and in Charleston, SC on June 15 at the Berkeley Center for the Arts at 7:00 pm.

Hazard native Dr. Scott Bersaglia founded the Sacred Winds Ensemble in 1997.  Recent performances of note by the ensemble include The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2011, the 2010 Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service Conference, and the 2008 Church Music Conference in New Orleans, LA. The 60-member professional wind ensemble is comprised of musicians from across the Eastern United States who perform unique concerts in which scripture is expounded and presented through art music.  All performances are sponsored by the Sacred Winds Foundation and come complimentary to the public.
