James Curnow to Conduct at Sacred Winds Ensemble June Concert

Kentucky-based composer, James Curnow, will be in residence with the Sacred Winds Ensemble as Composer-In-Residence and Guest Conductor.  Mr. Curnow will be conducting his composition, “Rhapsody on American Shape Note Melodies” which features well-known shape note tunes such as Pisgah, Avon (The Penitent’s Prayer), Bozrah, and Consolation.

Mr. Curnow is a well-known music composer for concert bands, brass bands, as well as vocal and instrumental solos and ensembles.  Recent commissions include works for the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the United States Army Band, as well as Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.  His teaching career includes both the public school and collegiate instruction.

Mr. Curnow was raised in Port Huron, Michigan where he received his initial musical training in the public schools and The Salvation Army Instrumental Programs.  He currently resides in Nicholasville, Kentucky where he is President, Composer, and Educational Consultant for Curnow Music Press, Inc. of Nicholasville.  Curnow Music publishes significant music for concert band and brass band.  He is editor of all music publications for The Salvation Army in Atlanta, Georgia.

The ensemble will present the concert in Hazard, KY on June 10 at The First Federal Center at 2:30 pm, The Paramount Theatre Ashland, KY on June 11 at 7:00 pm, and in Charleston, SC on June 15 at the Berkeley Center for the Arts at 7:00 pm.  The ensemble will also send outreach musical groups to area churches in Hazard, KY on June 10 and Charleston, SC on June 13.  In addition, the ensemble will present a Summer Music Symposium to middle school and high school instrumental music students their directors on June 15.

All performances are sponsored by the Sacred Winds Foundation and come complimentary to the public.
