Sacred Winds Expands Outreach

The Sacred Winds ensemble has performed in many venues throughout our Commonwealth. Being comprised mostly of music educators and professional musicians, the group has made significant contributions to the musical and educational life of our communities, especially throughout the region of Southeastern Kentucky.

From the outset, as the name suggests, Sacred Winds has had a distinctly Christian orientation and a stated intention to combine core scriptural values with the very finest musical repertoire. These programs have been extremely well attended as both the content and artistry of the group have received wide acclaim, resulting in deep appreciation for their contribution to the musical and religious life of our area. It is with sincere gratitude to God for the encouragement and support of churches, community leaders, and educators that the Sacred Winds has been able to make such an impact. In this same vein, the ministry is expanding its partnership base to include First Baptist Church of Hazard, Allen Baptist Church of Prestonsburg, and Grace Baptist Church of Somerset.

The group has been blessed to have had the First Federal Center on the KCTC campus in Hazard as its annual concert venue for 13 years. However, the College recently informed us that Sacred Winds would no longer be able to utilize this excellent facility due to the religious content of our programs. While disappointed in this decision, Sacred Winds will forever be grateful for the kindness shown to the group by the college staff.

When the board of directors learned of this policy, we considered the slate of upcoming programs and activities. With the great desire to stay in Eastern Kentucky, and as close as possible to Hazard, the question arose: What about an appropriate venue to accommodate the size of the group (60+ players) for both small group rehearsals and the full ensemble in concert; one that has adequate seating capacity for concert-goers; excellent lighting, acoustics, and public amenities? We have an open invitation from Allen Baptist Church, in the vicinity of Prestonsburg, to present our annual summer concerts in the church auditorium. Every basic criteria for a performance hall, plus the atmosphere conducive to worship inherent in the building itself, will be met with this change of facility. To that end, the ensemble will present its eighteenth annual summer concert series at Allen Baptist Church on June 15 beginning at 3:00 PM and on June 16 at the Centre for Rural Development in Somerset, KY at 7:00 PM. The program is presented through partnerships with Allen Baptist Church of Prestonsburg, KY and Grace Baptist Church of Somerset, KY as well as the generosity of our ministry partners. There is, therefore, no admission charge.

As last summer’s concert celebrated God’s faithfulness, we continue trusting in Him. While we will certainly experience change in our lives, we know that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17 ESV).

Testimonials

“I am impressed that the group is not satisfied with merely playing the standard repertoire.”
